Nowcaster/Social Media Intern

Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC, a private meteorological firm based in the Memphis metropolitan area, is seeking a qualified individual for the volunteer position of Social Media Intern for their MemphisWeather.net and StormWatch+ brands.

MemphisWeather.net (MWN) is a trusted name in Memphis and Mid-South weather. With nearly 30,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter, MWN is the #1 social media source for weather information for the Memphis metro area. During severe weather events, MWN provides "wall-to-wall" severe weather nowcasting services via social media.

StormWatch+ is a customizable severe weather notification service, delivering push notifications through the MemphisWeather.net mobile application and a national mobile app of the same name. It has successfully delivered hundreds of thousands of push notifications nationwide, keeping users informed during inclement weather and safe during severe events.

Due to continued growth on the social media front, as well as the need for Cirrus' leadership to focus on managing the expansion of new product and service offerings, a dependable, trustworthy, and enthusiastic self-starter is needed to assist in the daily operations of MWN and StormWatch+. Duties would include monitoring Memphis-area weather, updating social media feeds during both routine and adverse weather conditions, writing blog posts covering Mid-South weather patterns and/or national weather summaries.

Regular hours will be scheduled, but will also vary as inclement weather dictates. The candidate should have some flexibility with respect to availability. The ideal candidate is an undergraduate or graduate level meteorology student with strong communication skills (including writing and social media communication), an intermediate understanding of synoptic meteorology, particularly for patterns that affect the Mid-South, and a desire to place service to users and social media followers at the forefront.

This is a volunteer position, but will allow the selected individual(s) to gain hands-on experience from an NWA Digital Sealholder in using social media strategy to effectively communicate important (at times, life-saving) information that will be transferable to other real-world applications. The duties can be adequately fulfilled from outside the Memphis area, though training and occasional meetings in Memphis area may be required (scheduled at times convenient for all). Course credit may be available for the fall 2016 semester.
