THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEMPHIS HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT FOR FUNNEL CLOUDS EFFECTIVE UNTIL 430 PM CDT FOR NORTHEASTERN SHELBY COUNTY AND SOUTHWESTERN TIPTON COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST TENNESSEE…

AT 403 PM CDT SPOTTERS REPORTED FUNNEL CLOUDS 4 MILES NORTH OF MILLINGTON…MOVING NORTHEAST AT 30 MPH.

THESE FUNNEL CLOUDS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO TOUCH DOWN. HOWEVER IF THEY DO TOUCH DOWN…WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE 50 MPH OR LESS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEMPHIS IS MONITORING THE SITUATION CLOSELY. IF FUNNEL CLOUDS TOUCH DOWN OR IF A TORNADO WARNING IS ISSUED IN YOUR AREA…THEN SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.

For more info on gustnadoes, see my blog post from July 2008 on the subject. They are basically spin-ups that occur along outflow boundaries from thunderstorms.
