Fire & Ice! Mid-South weather for the next 36 hours

A quick update on the weather conditions expected in the Mid-South for the next day or two. Windy weather will continue overnight while overnight lows will only drop into the upper 60s to near 70. No rain is expected overnight, though clouds will increase rapidly after midnight.

For Monday, scattered showers and thunderstorms will start developing across the Memphis metro area after about 9am and last throughout the morning in a primarily hit-and-miss variety. If storms can get going, especially between 9am-12pm, there will be a threat of severe weather with them, including the possiblity of tornadoes as some storms could be supercells due to high levels of wind shear, cooling of the upper levels of the atmosphere, and very moist and warm air near the surface.

A squall line will be moving across eastern AR and approaching the metro counties around the lunch hour (see graphic from NWS above). This line will move through between 11am-1pm, bringing with it the threat of torrential rain, dangerous lightning, high wind, large hail, and perhaps an isolated tornado. It won’t last long, but will likely pack quite a punch – the “fire”  from the blog title. Wind will shift to the northwest behind it and continue to be gusty while temps fall into the 50s.  (It will be ~15-20 degrees colder during the afternoon commute than the morning commute!) By rush hour, most of the post-frontal rain will be done, though we could see anywhere from 1.5-2.0″ by that time (see graphic from NWS below).

Expected precipitation amounts Monday – 1″+ in the metro area

The “ice” from the blog title comes from the Tuesday morning forecast, as patchy frost is possible! Skies clear early Monday evening, wind dies down, and very cool air moves in behind the front. Most locations will see lows in the 30s Tuesday morning, though likely not below freezing.  Another warm-up is on tap by mid-late week.
