Sometimes, a weekend like this one – a much-needed “oasis” from summer, as a friend of MWN characterized it – is just what is needed as the dog days of summer wear on. To recap, the past few days have featured below normal temperatures with highs in the mid 80s, cool morning lows in the low to mid 60s, and a dry north wind that brought dewpoints down to the mid 50s – a level we haven’t seen in two months. But we do indeed have more “dog days” ahead before summer hopefully relents in about a month.
Looking ahead, the surface pattern will result in climbing dewpoints – into the still-tolerable 60s Monday, then the more uncomfortable 70s by Tuesday – while the upper level pattern in a northwest flow means more cloud cover and at least low-end rain chances nearly daily for the next week.
Currently severe weather is not anticipated, but some thunderstorms are possible as systems to our northwest weaken as they move into the Mid-South. Of course, since it is Elvis Week and the city is hosting the top golfers in the world for the PGA’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, it will be hot and humid!
The rain chances are not completely shunned though, as no rain has been recorded in the Mid-South since the first of the month. This is only the 5th time on record in Memphis that no rain has fallen for the first 11 days of August (the last time was 2021). Low-end drought conditions are creeping in, so a scattering of showers is much-needed!
So I hope you enjoyed the little taste of fall the past few days and are ready to push through the rest of summer! Before you know it, nights will again get a little cooler and daytime conditions will be more pleasant. Hang in there!
