I’m not sure we could have ordered up a better weekend given our collective needs and wants. Though some of you likely didn’t get enough, rain fell across the entire metro overnight, while those who like rumbles of thunder while sleeping also got your wish.
Rest of Saturday – soak it in!
As I type (early afternoon), a few sprinkles linger, but not enough to affect your plans today, and temps are in the mid 60s – after reaching the mid 90s yesterday! For those spending time outdoors this evening, you picked a great night! Any rain will be gone, clouds will clear early, and temperatures will be amazing – in the 60s! You will probably want to grab a light jacket.
Sunday – false fall continues
As we head into Sunday, #FalseFall (part II) rolls on. Open the windows early as we wake up to temps in the 50s! They’ll peak in the low to mid 80s in the afternoon with low humidity and a dry breeze, and you’ll see plenty of sunshine. Monday is basically a carbon copy of Sunday. Enjoy the outdoors before we get to the warmer part of the forecast! (Side note: the total lunar eclipse you may have been hearing about Sunday night is not visible in our part of the world.)
Next week – warming up but staying dry
Speaking of “the warmer part of the forecast,” that starts Tuesday. Rising temperatures are the trend the rest of the week. Though Tuesday starts cool (50s again), wind switches towards the south and, combined with dry air and sunshine, we have an airmass that is quick to warm up. We’ll be back near 90° Tuesday afternoon. Sunshine continues the rest of the week. (I hope you enjoyed last night’s rain because there is none in the forecast). High temperatures gradually heat up to the mid 90s by week’s end, while overnight lows will be back in the mid 60s with a bit more humidity in the air. (This is why we call these autumn-like cool spells “false fall!”)
As for the drought situation, as of this past week we were in a “moderate drought.” While the rain in the past 24 hours will help some local areas, many of you south of I-40 didn’t even see a quarter of an inch. With literally no raindrops on the horizon through at least next weekend, and hot/dry air returning, I expect no long-term overall drought improvement for the region. The outlooks for weeks 2-4 suggest precipitation could remain below average and temperatures above average deep into September. At some point, it’s time to give up lawn watering and call it the end of mowing season!
