September 2024 Climate Report for Memphis, TN

Following a slightly warmer than average August, September high temperatures averaged well below normal while low temperatures were a bit above normal. The net was a slightly cooler than average month. In fact, usually there are ten days in September that reach 90 degrees and this month there were only five with the highest temperature for the month being 92 degrees, reached twice.

The month started with drought conditions across the region and with only a half inch or so falling in the first 10 days, conditions remained dry. However, remnants of two tropical systems brought copious rainfall at mid-month and again near the end of the month. Hurricane Francine moved up from the Gulf of Mexico, dropping 6-7″ of rain over a period of about 4 days as it stalled out. A couple of weeks later, the moisture from Hurricane Helene wrapped into low pressure over the Mid-South, dropping another 2-3″ of rain over a couple days. Prior drought conditions and a lack of prolonged heavy downpours kept flooding to a minimum and by month’s end, drought conditions were nearly gone in the Memphis metro. There were no severe thunderstorms in September.
