This weekend’s weather: Real fall has arrived!

Weekend forecast, Nov 21-24
Dm Weekend 112124

With Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s about time Mother Nature makes it actually feel like fall!

Last week in this space, we hinted at the coolest air of the season arriving late this week, and that is exactly what we’ve got. A cold front on Tuesday night shoved the 70s to our south and another cold front on Thursday will reinforce sunny and autumn-like conditions into the weekend.

For those who have been patiently waiting for cool, crisp mornings, the next few days will be welcome. The first three weeks of November continued October’s string of warmer than normal conditions – averaging nearly ten degrees above normal. That streak breaks with this forecast.

In fact, as gusty wind that is common with seasonal transitions and frontal passages calms on Friday, a mainly clear sky will favor frosty conditions by Saturday morning for many of us. Break out those fire pits and smores ingredients Friday and Saturday evenings! Some spots, mainly in outlying areas east of Memphis, will approach the freezing mark Saturday morning, while the city drops to the mid 30s. For comparison, the typical “first fall freeze” in Memphis is November 12, so we’re now over a week beyond that.

First Fall Freeze

The crystal ball for Thanksgiving week indicates an unsettled pattern that starts warm on Monday, but cools back into the 50s for highs. At least a couple of rounds of rainfall are possible as multiple fronts move through the region. Word to the wise: you might want to have indoor plans ready, just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate when the house is full of family and friends!
