Temperature
With the exception of extreme heat in the middle of the month, when high temperatures peaked at a record-breaking 101 degrees on the 19th, near to below average temperatures prevailed for much of August. In fact, just over one week after the record high, a record “cool” max temperature was tied as the high temperature only reached 75 degrees on the 28th as “false fall” conditions dominated the last week of the month. For the month, the average temperature was almost one degree below normal.

For the period June 1-August 31 (what is referred to as meteorological summer for record-keeping purposes), the average temperature was 82.2 degrees, which was 0.6 degrees above average and the third warmest in the past decade.
Precipitation
While the month was generally fairly cool except the mid-month hot streak, dry conditions were also the rule. Scattered storms appeared on a few days, producing locally heavy rainfall and gusty wind in spots, including a one-inch rain at the airport on the 8th. However, excepting that storm, a total of just 0.04″ of rain fell for the rest of August at Memphis International Airport. Likewise, Bartlett personified dry conditions as well with less than one-tenth of an inch of rain for the entire month. The graphic below shows the dearth of rainfall for the month across much of the Mid-South.
Much like August 2024, a distinct lack of rain resulted in moderate drought conditions encompassing the majority of the greater metro. There were only two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for the month and a few damaging wind reports, mainly from storms on the 8th and 19th.
For the period June 1-August 31, total precipitation was 8.03 inches, which was 4.15″ below average (66%) and the driest summer since 2012.
