By most standards, this summer has actually been relatively mild in the Memphis metro. While May was warmer than average, the hottest it got was 92°. June’s average temperature was 2° below normal and once again the highest temperature was 92°. July also finished a little over a degree below normal despite some hotter days.…

Happy Friday, and happy August! Current outlooks for this upcoming week have most of the Mid-South below average in terms of humidity along with heat indices, but rain chances will return once a front begins to push north up towards metro this weekend. No washouts expected, but some areas may see more rain than others.…

It’s been a fairly wild weather week in the Mid-South. First we dealt with the remnants of “just briefly” Hurricane Barry, which moved across western AR as a tropical depression then sliced into southern MO and headed east into the Mid-Atlantic. Rainfall totals were generally in the 4-6″ range from Saturday through Wednesday in the…

Briefly a hurricane, Barry made landfall on the central Louisiana Gulf Coast this morning and is moving slowly north through Louisiana. It will remain over Louisiana through much of Sunday before heading north through central Arkansas west of Little Rock Monday as it weakens to a tropical depression. Unfortunately, that means the weather in the…

More rain chances are returning to the Mid-South, and this time in the form of a remnant tropical cyclone. Barry is getting closer to the coast, and currently most models are in agreement that some remnants will be heading our way. This is good news for some, and bad news for others. While some areas…

As I type, the Memphis metro is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch with yet another in a recent string of mesoscale convective systems (MCS) poised to affect the region. This just a day after the final power restorations were made from the Wednesday night storms. Let’s hope we don’t have a repeat of the storm…

After a couple of days of scattered showers and storms but no major impacts, the primary weather system for the week is heading our way and will move through Wednesday night. This system brings our best chance of widespread rainfall, lightning and thunder, and the potential for scattered severe storms. First, overnight tonight (Tuesday) and…

Wow this weather has been absolutely amazing! Below average temps around Memphis this week, all in thanks to a large trough situated over the eastern part of the U.S. Last night winds shifted however, and now it’s time for us all to unfortunately return back to June. That means humidity, rain, and a couple of thunderstorms…

Wow, May has flown by! Between commitments to Memphis in May, work, and shuffling the #TeamMWN intern deck, the blog has taken a backseat! Time to get back to business! Summer’s arrival I know you didn’t miss its arrival, because it kind of came right in the front door without knocking! It seems like an…

While it may not officially be summer yet, the rest of this week and next week sure do feel like summertime. Luckily, rain chances will stay away now through Saturday leaving us with some pretty nice and warm conditions. Shower and thunderstorm chances will return on Sunday, before hanging around throughout next week. Besides that,…

Yours truly has been on-site at Beale Street Music Festival warding away the lightning and making sure the organizers and operations personnel have the very latest…

Our somewhat dry weather pattern could only last so long as we have transitioned back into an unsettled pattern. Showers and thunderstorms will be the main discussion over the next few days with chances now through Saturday. Temps will remain near 80 through the remainder of the week before falling back into the 70s this…

After a somewhat chilly end to last week and near-average weekend, temps have rebounded to above average and will stay there through tomorrow. As another round of showers and some thunderstorms knocks on our doorstep for Thursday, temps will fall back to just below average. Luckily, following these showers, sunny skies and near-average temperatures will…

Happy Easter Weekend Everyone! We have a beautiful couple of days in store for us, that everyone can enjoy. An upper level low that brought us our past few rainy days has shifted east, and is currently resting over eastern Kentucky. As it continues to stall over towards the Appalachians, a high pressure system will…

Oh April. While I love the warmer temperatures, we always begin to see an increase in severe weather activity around this time of year. From a climatology standpoint, April is when we do see the most severe weather. After what has been a somewhat quiet week so far, things will be changing tomorrow as another…

OK maybe so, but if April showers DO have some thing to do with springtime flora, then we must be angling for a colorful May! Officially, we’ve already had nearly 4″ of rain this month, and my mid-month paycheck hasn’t even arrived yet. It’s possible we’ll pass the (entire month) April average rainfall this weekend.…

How nice have the past few days been? I know I can’t speak for everyone, but I have really enjoyed the sunshine and warmer temps! Unfortunately, we do have two rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the next few days that won’t be as pleasant. The first round, Thursday evening, will consist of mostly scattered…
