April 2025 Climate Report for Memphis, TN

The month of April ended with above normal temperatures on average, but had large swings from well below normal to record-tying warmth. The month started quite warm, which fueled multiple severe weather and flooding events through the 5th.

Behind the severe weather, a cooler pattern overall took hold through the middle of the month, though a few days peaked near 80 degrees before another cold front brought below normal temperatures again. The second half of the month was generally warmer than average and it was this persistent warmth that drove the monthly average up. As evidence of the large swings, the highest temperature for the month in Bartlett was 90 degrees, while the coolest was in the mid 30s!

.The month of April, particularly the period from the 2nd through 5th, will go into the history books for multiple heavy rain/flooding and severe weather events. For the month, precipitation more than doubled the monthly average, focused largely on three days (2nd, 3rd, 5th) which produced two daily precipitation records, two of the top 4 wettest April days on record, and was the 4th wettest four-day stretch on record in Memphis for any time of year, which resulted in significant flash, urban and river flooding across the area. Behind the stormy pattern, two weeks of dry weather settled in before precipitation became more routine and reasonable the rest of the month.

Thunderstorm activity could be described as extreme and historic in the first week of the month. Besides the flooding mentioned above, multiple days of Enhanced to High Risk (levels 3-5) severe weather outlooks were forecast. A total of 35 tornadoes (3 of which were added after the graphic below was produced) and dozens of severe weather reports were received over the course of the week, the result of 223 severe weather warnings issued by NWS-Memphis, including 96 tornado warnings.
